The Alter-Lego Company was born in Portugal in the beginning of 2007, as an outcome of the intense artistic collaboration between Juantxo Berasategui and Pedro Fabião since 2003, in theatre groups of Coimbra (Portugal) and in “Operação Nariz Vermelho”, the Portuguese hospital clowning association.

They had many loose ideas as raw material, they wanted to organize it. They went to Valencia, Spain, to work with the director Sergio Claramunt, main teacher of clowning from both. They start giving “Ditu&Feitu” a shape.
In the meanwhile, for a clown show creation process needs an audience, they travel extensively through several European countries, presenting different versions of the work. Same year, in July, they build in Oporto the final version. Nevertheless, the show is still in continuous mutation.
Since then, the company has been presenting their first show “Ditu&Feitu” in Portugal, Spain, Germany and Brazil, besides its “crossing projects” with other companies from Portugal and Spain, or several solo presentations done by its members.

SYNOPSIS

There’s an elegant character that comes from far away to do a musical performance in front of a demanding audience. He brings a poor helper who he found on his way, a second character with whom he doesn’t share the language. The relationship is a classic: Ditu wants to please the audience and Feitu wants to please the first; the first has the second as a problem and the second has a problem at every second; the first is a serious and long greyhound and the second an unconscious chimpanzee: they live in two parallel realities. The conflict is inevitable and taken to its ultimate consequences will render a gracious flute concert into a spectacular and improvised boxing fight.

Today we talk much about the importance of cooperating. In this show, there’s not much talk and even less cooperation. Perhaps it’s a show from yesterday. Or else from tomorrow. Above all, from a time that we all know, where there’s only the will to do and the conflict between two different poles with two different ways of doing. The two poles that fight each other but at the same time attract each other.

And the surprise, and the shame, and the music, and the wrath turn into a show. And the audience more and more inside the show, until it touches the heart.

Drowning one's sorrows (human statue)

A human statue formed by a man on a suit, immersed in a white bath. Using the saying "Drowning one's sorrows" as a title, the artist follows it to the letter and immerses himself in a bath where he stays for up to two hours and a half in stillness, breething through a simple and almost invisible mechanism. Sometimes, his eyes open suddenly as an answer to the spectator who awakens him from his timeless sleep.

Modern dance, juggling, neutral mask. A form for new circus. A juggler and a actor meet in the dance of a difficult and crushing life. There’s an hierarchy that’s seen under a perspective that ends up inverting it, giving the prize of freedom to the one who still can dream and punishment the one who’s already dead within a body that still doesn’t know it.

Life at work, the work of every life - a silent show, drawn from subtle and brutal aesthetics.

By this time with 25 minutes, it soon will undergo a new creation process that will give it twice its present length.

SERGIO CLARAMUNT (Valencia, 1963)

Graduate in Theatre Studies by the University of La Sorbonne, Paris III and by the International Theatre School Jacques Lecoq, Paris.
He worked with Spanish and French companies as Vaganovos, Nas Teatre, Compagnie Dorian Moretus, Theatre de la Jacquerie, amongst others.
He combines theatre direction with teaching, having directed workshops through Spain, South America and Portugal.
Founder and artistic director of PayaSOSpital, spanish ONG of declared public utility, intervening in the Clinics of Valencia, Castellón e Alicante (Spain) since 1999.

Pedro Fabião da Silva Pinto

Pedro was born in Oporto in 1981, having lived in Oporto, Braga, Coimbra (Portugal), S. Salvador da Bahia (Brazil), Valencia (Spain), Tübingen (Germany) and Paris.
He's got a degree in Psychology by the University of Coimbra and trained also in Psychodrama.
Since 1997, extensive training as an actor, being the most important with António Fonseca, José Miguel Braga, Marcantonio D’el Carlo (1997/99), Carmen Paternostro e Rafael Moraes, (Brazil – 2001/02), Cristina do Aido, José de Abreu Fonseca, Carla Bolito, Nuno Coelho, Volker Quandt (2002/05), Paulo Castro, Rodrigo Malvar e Catarina Lacerda, Denis Bernard (2005-2006), Sergio Claramunt (2007) and Philippe Gaulier (2008-2009).
He has collaborated as an actor in different theatre companies, such as Sindicato de Poesia (Braga), Teatro do Morcego (Coimbra), Teatro do Frio (Oporto), and mainly CITAC (Coimbra), where his collaboration extended to directing and production. He performed in more than a dozen plays with these companies.
During the last 6 years, frequent training in clowning with masters as Rafael Moraes (Brazil – 2002), Gabriel Chame Buendia (2004), Sergio Claramunt (2005/07), Koldovico Via e Nicolas Bernard (2007), Ângela de Castro, Luísa Sanchez Gaillard, Ami Hattab (2008, 2009) and Philippe Gaulier (2009).
He has also been teaching in several clown workshops in amateur and university theatre groups as well as in theatre festivals.
Since 2004, he integrates the artistic team of Operação Nariz Vermelho (ONV), the Portuguese professional hospital clowning group.
In January 2007 he founds Alter-Lego Company with Juantxo Berasategui, whose debut show “Ditu&Feitu”, under the direction of Sergio Claramunt, is performed for the first time in July of the same year.
Since the second half of 2008 he's been studying with Philippe Gaulier in Paris.

Juantxo Berasategui Verástegui

Juantxo was born in Segorbe (Spain) in 1980. He lived in Valencia lost of his life, with the exception of one year in England and two in Portugal, with many other travels in between.
He has a degree in Medicine by Valencia University. He now also works as a M.D. and will soon start his specialization training.
He started his artistic training in 1999, doing several juggling and aerobatics workshops in Valencia’s Circus association. From 2003 on, he attended many clown workshops with Sergio Claramunt, Jesús Jara, Koldovico Vio, Nicola Bernard, Ami Hattab among others. He finished the theatre course offered by CITAC (Coimbra – Portugal). He also attended workshops on physical theatre, improvisation, Buffon, voice, Neutral Mask, etc.
He works frequently with Viviendo del Cuento Theatre (Valencia) in different animation events since 1999.
He integrates the artistic team of PayaSOSpital (hospital clowning) since July 2003. For two years (2004/2005) he also joins Operação Nariz Vermelho (hospital clowning – Portugal). He worked in CITAC (Coimbra – Portugal) in several theatre projects.
He won the 3rd prize of the Homens-Estátua Contest in Espinho (contest of living statues, Portugal) in June 2005 with the statue “Afogando as Mágoas”.
Founder, together with Pedro Fabião, of the Alter-Lego theatre company. Also, in 2008, founder of Compañia Aerea with Jimena Cavaletti and Luka Soriano. He's been touring Europe and South America with the latest show "Usted está aquí" ("You are here").
